7 DIY Body Scrub Ideas

DIY body scrub belongs to one of the skin exfoliating options that clean the skin of dirt and other impurities. Body scrub may consist of different materials such as a salt with essential oil. Some of the body scrubs such as commercial ones contain fruit, milk and herbal essences. Here the ideas/recipe for a DIY body scrub and their bases.


Ingredients of  Body Scrubs

Oil and essence base

Herbal scrubs may contain several or each of the essential oil and extracts from herbs such as rosemary, sage, dill, oregano, thyme, cardamom, cilantro, chamomile, basil, parsley, mint, fennel, lavender, catnip, chervil, cilantro, peppermint, aloe vera, bergamot, stevia, winter savory, and lemongrass. Herbs may heal, tea tree,  detox, invigorate and soothe skin. The herbal effects depend on the type of herbs used.


Essential oil

Essential oil scrub may contain a combo or each of these: comfrey, burdock, curry plant, cinnamon, garlic, hot pepper, cypress, ylang-ylang, neroli, chamomile, lavender, geranium, juniper, and sage. Each of these herbs features benefits such as cell growth, stimulation, pigmentation, shrinking of blood vessels, skin moisturizing, fights aging and treating cracked and skin ailments.



Certain fruits possess skincare properties such as vitamins, enzymes, and antioxidants. These fruits benefit the skin: apple, apricot, avocado, cherries, gooseberry, grapes, lemon, mango, muskmelon, peach, pineapple, pomegranate, prunes, strawberry, and watermelon. Salt scrub with its abrasive properties can benefit your oily skin and reduce acne outbursts. Salt contains magnesium and sulfate that can decrease inflammation and detoxify skin. Also, its antibacterial effects can reduce microbes.



Like nuts, seeds contain fats, fiber, protein and a combo of nutrients that prevent inflammation, fight aging, encourage healthy collagen, lower blood sugar, treat acne and wrinkles. Pumpkin seeds contain magnesium, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, chlorophyll, protein and iron – all can improve skin blood flow and lower stress. Chia seeds have zinc, iron, potassium, and B Vitamins that can help your skin grow nails, improve firmness and minimize wrinkles. Flax seeds constitute the same nutrients. Seven DIY Body Scrub Ideas

With the above body scrub ingredients, you might have an idea of what goes on each DIY body scrub. Here are the recipes:

Coconut oil, ginger and sugar scrub

  • ½ cup of coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp coarsely chopped ginger
  • ½ cup kosher salt
  • ½ cup cold-pressed oil – almond, tea seed, sunflower, and jojoba oil
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1-5 drops of essential oil – lavender, dill, oregano, thyme, sage.

In a bowl, heat the chopped ginger and coconut oil for 5-10 minutes until the ginger essence blends into the oil. Press the mixture into a fine mesh. Put some cold-pressed oil into the mix. Add salt and sugar and the essential oil.



Apply into your wet skin and let it sit for 2-4 minutes. With a washcloth covering your face, steam your face with a steamy shower. Wipe with a wet washcloth and rinse.


Coffee and Sugar Scrub 

  • ½ cup coffee
  • 2-3 vitamin E capsules
  • 3 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ cup of sugar

Mix the ingredients until they become a coarse paste. Apply into your skin while gently massaging your skin for 5-10 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water. Do this for 2-3 times per week.


Yogurt Body Scrub

  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yogurt
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon honey

Mix the ingredients into a coarse paste. Apply it into your skin. Gently massage your skin. Leave for 5-10 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water.


Cranberry Sugar Scrub

  • 1 cup fresh and pureed cranberries
  • 1 cup of coconut oil
  • 14 drops of fragrant essential oil
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar

Mix the ingredients and store in a jar. Apply the scrub by massaging in a circular fashion. Rinse with a hydrating body scrub and rinse lukewarm water.


Cinnamon with Vanilla and  Sugar

  • ½ cup sugar, granulated
  • ½ cup of coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon  powder
  • 1-4 drops of cinnamon essential oil
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla essential oil

Combine the sugar and vanilla. Add drops of essential oil and bring the mixture into fine and coarse consistency.


Minty Sugar Scrub

  • ½ cup granulated or muscovado sugar
  • 5-10 drops of mint essential oil
  • ½ cup finely chopped mint leaves

Mix the ingredients and bring it to a fine consistency. Apply them into your face and leave for 5-10 minutes. Spend 1-2 minutes for each area and massage in a circular motion. Rinse with lukewarm water.


Lemon and Olive Oil Scrub

  • ¼ cup lemon zest
  • 5-10 drops of essential oil (rosemary, sage, grapefruit)
  • 3 cups muscovado or granulated sugar
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ½ cup lemon juice

Mix the sugar and olive oil. Add the lemon juice and zest. Add some essential oil drops. Apply in a circular fashion and rinse with lukewarm water.
